I participated in my first DietBet this past month and I’m still not sure how I feel about it.
It was a Jillian Michael’s challenge where you bet $30 that you will lose 4% of your body weight in 4 weeks. Knowing this is absolutely possible if you just put effort into it, and having a few extra bucks in my Paypal and Dietbet accepting Paypal and just needing a kick in the ass – I decided to take the plunge.
I was traveling when the game started on Oct 4 – and you have to weigh out from the same scale on which you weigh in – so I had to wait until I was home on Oct 13 to weigh in with my special keyword and a very secure 2-photos-of-you-on-the-scale system.
I didn’t do much for the Dietbet to be totally honest. I’ve already been in a rhythm of going for walks regularly on my lunch breaks – AND we just got a puppy, so there has been a lot of walking, but also some care regarding consumption towards the end there.
Dietbet is an interesting concept. You bet that you will lose 4% of your weight, and if you fail to do so, the winners in the challenge split your bet.
I started off trying to think of it like I gave these people my $$ and they’re only going to give it back to me if I weigh again in 4 weeks and have lost at least 4% of my body weight.
The weird thing is that you get more $ if other people fail – so energetically you kind of want others in the game to not succeed. And I’m just not into that. Feels gross.
So I should get the final results any minute. I’ll update this post when I know more about the actual numbers of winners and non-winners.
There is a 10% / 6 month Dietbet that just started, and I think it’s a really interesting concept, but frankly it makes an subconscious part of me *want* others to fail so I get more on top of my original bet. It’s not aligned with my core values. I think I’m just not into that.
UPDATE: I won $52.08 on my Dietbet of $30. Overall 6,892 players lost 39,434lbs and the pot was $215,400. I wonder how many people DIDN’T make their 4% in order for me to earn $22.08 from this bet. If a train leaves Albuquerque at 50 mph… Any math majors in the house wanna that out for me, post in the comments below and I’ll send you a sticker from the best bike shop in St. Johns, Portland, Oregon: BlockBikes.
