Life is about choices.
Sometimes when we’re in the midst of simply living, we don’t realize the choices that we’re making. I used to come in to work and head straight to the Flavia coffee machine and throw in the packet labeled “espresso” and load up my cup with those land-o-lakes creamers (4 of ’em) and a billion packets of sugar (6-8 of ’em). And I’d probably have one later in the afternoon too, with all the same fixins.
Now, I still like my coffee light and sweet – I really don’t see that changing any time soon, but I’ve changed some of my consumption behaviors and I’m pretty excited about that.
I remain an espresso fiend, but I’m cutting back so that I have one almond milk latte in the morning before work, no sugar added. I freakin love it. The almond milk is just sweet enough to take the bitterness out of the espresso.
In an effort to cut back on the completely unnecessary fat and sugar that I enjoy in my coffee (not to mention caffeine-induced mood swings) I now drink tea at work. And I’m proud to say that I don’t add anything to it anymore. First I cut back the creamer, then the sugar, and now I’m good to go without any fixins.
Also pictured above is my breakfast: 4 oz of chobani greek yogurt, strawberry with 1/3 cup of granola on top. It’s yum. And my body definitely feels the benefit of some breakfast. There’s still a bit of sugar in it, but I’m getting there..
I’ve learned that in order to be successful here, in addition to the pure willingness to work for it, one must make behavior changes. This stuff is about making lifestyle changes, not just temporary fluctuations in habit.
I’m happy about this whole coffee thing – it’s a pretty big deal for me.
